UFC on ESPN 62: Jared Cannonier vs. Caio Borralho - Preview and Prediction

Tonight’s UFC on ESPN 62 card brings us an exciting middleweight clash between Jared Cannonier and Caio Borralho, set to unfold in the Apex. With both fighters known for their striking prowess and grappling abilities, fans can expect a highly competitive bout.

Jared Cannonier: Veteran Power and Versatility

Jared "The Killa Gorilla" Cannonier, holding a record of 17-7 MMA, 10-7 UFC, is a seasoned fighter with a reputation for knockout power. Standing at 5’11” with a reach of 77.5 inches, the 40-year-old is known for his switch-stance kickboxing style, which he has honed under the guidance of John Crouch at MMA Lab in Arizona. Cannonier’s ability to adapt and switch stances has made him a formidable opponent, as he can deliver devastating hooks, uppercuts, and leg kicks from either side.

Despite his age, Cannonier has shown significant improvements in his striking, particularly in his countering ability. His hard leg kicks, especially the calf kicks from both stances, are a key part of his game plan. Additionally, Cannonier's grappling has evolved, with strong wrestling skills and heavy ground-and-pound when he secures a dominant position.

However, Cannonier's recent performance, a TKO loss to Nassourdine Imavov, has raised questions about his durability, especially against southpaw fighters. With a 4-2 record against UFC-level southpaws, Cannonier has experienced difficulties when facing opponents who can counter effectively from a southpaw stance.

Caio Borralho: Rising Star with Grappling Acumen

Caio Borralho, with an impressive 16-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC record, is a fighter on the rise. The 31-year-old Brazilian stands at 6’1” with a 75-inch reach and brings a diverse skill set to the octagon, thanks to his background in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, and Muay Thai. Fighting out of the Fighting Nerds camp in Brazil, Borralho has steadily improved his striking game, adding layers of complexity, particularly with his lead hand.

Borralho’s striking is complemented by his powerful southpaw kicks and crosses, targeting all three levels. His grappling is where he truly shines, with a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and multiple accolades in judo. Borralho’s takedown game is flexible and effective, whether he’s executing trips from the clinch or shooting for doubles in the open.

One of Borralho’s strengths lies in his transitional grappling, particularly when working from topside. However, when on his back, he has shown a tendency to wait for submission or stand-up opportunities, which could be a vulnerability against someone like Cannonier, who is relentless in ground-and-pound situations.

Fight Breakdown and Prediction

This middleweight bout presents an intriguing clash of styles. Cannonier’s power and experience are significant factors, but Borralho’s youthful energy and evolving striking game make him a dangerous opponent. While Cannonier has the tools to make this a tough night for Borralho, the Brazilian’s grappling and southpaw stance could create openings, particularly with his improved lead hand and feints.

Given Cannonier’s history of struggling against southpaws and his recent quick turnaround after a TKO loss, Borralho might have the edge in this fight. The prediction leans towards Borralho securing a victory, possibly through a club-and-sub in the second round, capitalizing on a right hook that leads to a submission finish.

Final Prediction: Caio Borralho wins via submission in Round 2.
