Saturday, May 13 --For years, the UFC heavyweight division has been a dominant force in the world of mixed martial arts, boasting some of the most talented and fearsome fighters on the planet. However, recent events have cast doubt on this once-unquestioned supremacy. Take tonight's showdown between Jailton Almeida and the established contender Rozenstruik, for example. Despite Rozenstruik's experience, Almeida was widely favored going in.
Knock Knock
Prior to the fight, I was well aware of Almeida's craftiness and ability to keep Rozenstruik down. And that's just what he did while making it look effortlessly, almost like he was in a sparring match. The submission came via rear naked choke leaving Rozenstruik disappointed and fans wondering where does he go from here? One question that keeps bugging me is "Are these guys as good as their predecessors"? It feels like the last era of heavyweights really outshines the current one. It was exciting having Jon Jones back but it looks like he's making his next fight his last and without Jon the division and the UFC on the whole feel a bit lighter.
With Jon gone the only other legend left is Stipe and it doesn't seem like he'll be staying too much longer either. Guys like Aspinall and Tuivasa are NOT having runs like the likes of Cain Vasquez, Verdum, and Overeem to be honest. How long before we see another promotion take the top heavyweight spot? All you probably have to do right now would be sign Ngannou. That's our takeaway for UFC Charlotte.
