Cinco De Mayo 2023 -- One Championship showed Western audiences last night that they're a bigger contender in the MMA landscape than we thought. I think before last night this side of the world knew ONE was formidable but after this show fans have now come to love it.
Let's Mix
It Up, Guys!
In case you were unaware, ONE Championship distinguishes itself from other promotions by incorporating a diverse array of martial arts styles in its competitions. Their events feature athletes who are skilled in disciplines such as Muay Thai, kickboxing, mixed martial arts (MMA), and submission grappling.
The prelims featured a group of relatively unknown fighters from other parts of the world. However, last night they demonstrated their impressive skills and proved that they're elite competitors in their right. Many of these talented fighters train with some of the biggest names in the sport, including UFC champions like Henry Cejudo and Urijah Faber. It's worth noting that ONE Championship's middleweight division has a weight limit of 205 pounds.
It's important to acknowledge Sang's accomplishment, but it's also worth mentioning that the middleweight king of the UFC, Israel Adesanya, still holds the title of the world's best middleweight. Adesanya has proven himself as a dominant force in the sport, and his impressive performances have solidified his place at the top of the division. However, Sang's performance demonstrated that the ONE Championship middleweight division is no joke and that the competition in the sport is as fierce as ever. Former UFC fighter Sage Northcutt made his return to the ring after a four-year layoff caused by the horrible injury he sustained in his last fight. The fight was quick and the victory sweet no doubt. He expressed interest in being a multiple sport fighter so we'll most likely see him challenging submission grapplers soon.
I hope fight fans here remember fighters like Stamp Fairtex who is a lovely fighter who challenged herself in her first MMA match finishing her opponent with a perfectly thrown Muy Thai kick. Or the incredible skills of the kind and generous Mikey Musumeci who was on the offense the whole match. In my opinion, the performance of the night had to go to Rodtang who walked away with a double bonus of 100,000 dollars. Rodtang called out an old foe, the newly crowned bantamweight champ "The General" Haggerty. It may be a short reign if Rodtang is going up.
Thanks For The Good Times One Championship ..?
Mighty Mouse Johnson may be the best all-around fighter to have ever done it. His task was to finish this rubber match against someone who beat him before. This forced him to become even better in their second fight putting Johnson even higher on everyone's p4p list. Moraes this time started off very well proving he was still a strong warrior that Mouse was not going to put away easily.
Mouse showed his professionalism and legendary fight IQ in round three when he started landing knees in the clinch even throwing a couple of jumping knees. Moraes started holding on for dear life as Johnson chopped away. Moraes started fading after that and Mighty coasted to the finish line. Afterward, their sportsmanship touched the fighting spirit of everyone watching. It's respected and celebrated today, especially here at Fightingyo. As Mighty Mouse took the mic he asked the crowd "Do you guys want to see me again?" A question he could not answer right away. As he finished his speech the next contender was already there waiting to face off. It was no doubt a tough moment for Johnson as he's had a long career. We'll see where he goes from here.
