May 24 -- We finally get the news. T-Bud Crawford and Errol Spence Jr have agreed to fight for the undisputed title at 147 lbs, a fight that's escaped us time and time again. Boxing fans need this as there are just not enough of the best fighting the best in this sport. Some would say boxing is already dead and nothing can bring it back but real fans loyal to the sport say otherwise. Look at Canelo Alvarez commanding crowds of 73k+ breaking attendance records or all the talent in the lightweight division at the moment.
YOU SAID IT YOURSELF
"Why Wouldn't I
Just Go Get This Bread" -Errol Spence
Years ago this confrontation went down when both camps bumped into each other. The talk got heated and both had a lot to say confidently to each other. If this fight had happened back then I think it would have been more valid than in their current state. That would have been the real undisputed fighter and would have been considered an all-time great. But after multiple back-and-forth contract disputes, I don't blame fans if the hype is not there. This is not the first fight for this to happen but at least it sounds like this time it will finally happen. Errol seemed to think going after other fighters to "get the bag" was a better way to spend his time and so he did. Defeating them all and dominating every second of every fight usually for the next couple of years.
After an insane car crash that Errol survived, many thought he might not return. The extent of the damages sustained is still relatively unknown. He took a whole year off to recover and when he was about to come back he sustained an injury to his eye during fight week which put him out a couple more months. After all that time he dominated Danny Garcia and sent him into the weight class. Meanwhile, Spence has been on his own journey Crawford has racked up a slew of wins that fans really didn't care about. Some of them like Kell Brooke stood no chance and were not competitive at all. The weight class has lost a lot of its spark with these champions taking years off at a time but it seems the story is close to coming full circle.
Yesterday May 23, 2023, ESPN announced that the fight has been officially made and Terrence Crawford will be facing Errol Spence Jr this summer on July 29th. This may be one of the most anticipated fights of all time now and these future hall of famers will definitely bring the best of themselves against each other.
