Artur Beterbiev's eagerly awaited clash with Dmitry Bivol for the undisputed light heavyweight championship has hit a delay after Beterbiev suffered a ruptured meniscus. The June 1 showdown in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is now on hold as Beterbiev undergoes knee surgery, with his return not expected until at least September.
Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, disclosed to ESPN that efforts are underway to secure a replacement opponent for Bivol on the June 1 card.
Meanwhile, the stacked undercard featuring a battle between Matchroom and Queensberry fighters remains set for the date. The headline attraction there sees former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder face Zhilei Zhang, with Wilder aiming for redemption following his loss to Joseph Parker and eyeing a subsequent bout against Jared Anderson in August.
The standout of the night was set to be Beterbiev vs. Bivol, a showdown between two Russian powerhouses in the light heavyweight division. Bivol, ESPN's No. 5 pound-for-pound fighter, holds the WBA title and boasts a victory over boxing luminary Canelo Alvarez. Beterbiev, ESPN's top light heavyweight, holds the WBO, WBC, and IBF belts, with an impressive 100% knockout rate.
The matchup promised a clash of styles: Bivol's slick, technical approach against Beterbiev's power-punching aggression. Bivol's most recent outing saw him dominate Lyndon Arthur in December, whereas Beterbiev's return in January marked a commanding victory over Callum Smith.
The postponement serves as a temporary setback to what is billed as one of the most anticipated fights in light heavyweight history. Fans will have to wait a little longer for this collision of boxing titans, but the expectation and excitement surrounding Beterbiev vs. Bivol remain undiminished.
